In the 1950s, Elizabeth Taylor carried one of Gucci’s bamboo-handled tote bags, another adaptation to material rationing. (No list of revered designer purses would be complete without Gucci.) The material was first used on suitcases before finding enduring popularity on handbags. Its woven hemp fabric from Naples, adorned with the brand’s signature diamond print, was a hit, especially among A-list celebrities. In the mid-1930s, a League of Nations embargo against Italy pushed Gucci to experiment with alternatives to imported leather. In 1938, he brought three of his sons - Aldo, Vasco and Rodolfo - into the business and expanded it to Rome and later Milan. But as its reputation flourished, particularly among the English aristocracy, so too did its footprint. So, in 1921, after a stint at Franzi, a luggage company in his hometown of Florence, he opened a leather goods shop of his own.Īt first, Gucci’s Florence business specialized in equestrian accessories. Guccio Gucci (1881–1953) admired the stylish suitcases he saw wealthy guests arrive with at the Savoy Hotel in London, where he worked as a bellhop.
Today, it’s an internationally renowned luxury house with an iconic logo, and vintage Gucci clothing, handbags and shoes are among high fashion's most covetable goods. The space between the holes is 1 inch or 2.54 cm.Long before trend-bucking creative director Alessandro Michele brought his hallucinatory “Utopian Fantasy” campaign to Gucci, it was a modest Italian leather shop. In hindsight, this makes perfect sense as you want to leave some room left and right for adjustment. So again: my size 80 belt is 80 cm measured from the tip of the buckle to the middle hole! There are 5 pre-punched holes, so that would be the third one in. When the eagerly awaited belt finally arrived, it turned out that it was actually too long and the ideal size for me would have been a size 75, because it corresponds to….(drum roll)… the length measured from buckle to the middle hole! In centimeters! So please please double and triple make sure that when you measure yourself, read the cm side of the measuring tape!! Fed up and impatient, I took my chances and ordered my belt in a size 80, assuming it meant the whole length of the belt from end to end. The problem was, I did not know my size! Belt sizes online were listed from size 60 upwards but I did not really know what that number actually meant, as in does a size 60 mean 60 around my waist, my hips, or does it mean the total length of the belt? I called two different Gucci stores for help but received two completely different answers. I was dying to get my hands on the iconic double G belt but the nearest boutique that stocked them was not accessible so my only option was to order online.
What’s your Gucci belt size? How to find your measurements: Needless to say I am a big fan of the both stylish and functional design! I think this is much more sensible than having a fixed loop because the tip length changes depending on where you wear your belt more length wearing around waist or high-waisted pants or less wearing it lower. The tip is then held in place with a belt loop that isn’t sewn onto the band itself but attached to a separate loop underneath which makes it adjustable. I find this design so much easier! It also limits the constant rubbing of the buckle against the band at the spot where you would normally pull the buckle back to feed the prong through, so this belt shouldn’t wear out as fast.
You can see that instead of a long prong used in regular belts (fed into the hole from the inside out), there is a small knob that you poke through the hole from the top.
This belt is super easy to use as illustrated below:įirst, feed the tip of the belt underneath the buckle through the tongue. This explains the vintage feel of the design and I wanted to enhance this by choosing the faded brown leather. Head designer Alessandro Michele took his inspiration from the Marmont buckle that Gucci used in the 70’s and he relaunched it for his contemporary collection. The double G pictured above is the “new” Marmont buckle design. 5″ wide (or 2 cm) in the faded, unfinished leather.
